      Hi and thank you. Yes, space or ether is Aristotle's take on the 5th element. I considered and chose "time" because it was easier for me to see the images in this theme. In any case, it's interesting to challenge your limits and choose something that makes you paint different paintings than the ones you usually paint.

    Love your videos. Everything was on point here, I selected each of your colours just as you said them except for Sap Green. I use so much Paynes grey as my dark too. (Pronounced Pains) What are your thoughts on the Phthalo colours?

    • @skora-theoldguy
      @skora-theoldguy День назад

      Hi. Thank you. Why not the Sap green? The phthalo colors are very strongly pigmented. You only use a small amount of it when mixing the colors. I used to use the green Phthalo a lot but moved away from it because it was very powerful. I chose SAP green instead ... the one from Golden is in my opinion the best. I think ,I will give it new chance. They come in different shades. The blue gives very beautiful shades when mixed with, for example, Hansa yellow. They don't have any red in them either, so the green shades are very brilliant. However, the phthalo colors give, I think, a slightly unnatural sheen, you have to be a little careful here, of course depending on what you are painting. As I understand the specifications, the phthalo pigment is not toxic like, for example, the cadmium pigments are, so that speaks in their favor. Try them out and let me hear about your experienses.

    All good. I paint with oils and only linseed oil. If I open up a solvent, headache. But I also get a headache from acrylics. Linseed oil is OK but it smells. Ventilation. Some oil paints have other mystery ingredients that can also cause headaches. Anyway, great advice, especially on lighting which I need to improve. And I totally agree having too bright light can cause dark paintings. Been there 🙂

    What does great artists steal mean if good artist borrow

    • @skora-theoldguy
      @skora-theoldguy День назад

      Yes, good question. I think it was something Picasso said to make a joke and tell that he got inspiration and used other artists ideas if they worked for him. Perhaps to borrow something is to admit it: I do like him to get this effect... While stealing, for example if you use the same motif ... copy it ... from another artist and pretend it is your own. But it's only a funny quote from Picasso and I use it to say that you shouldn't be so afraid to copy, it will never be the same anyway: Be inspired and use what works for you... that's the message. I think that's what Picasso meant too.

    Hi Henrik As a 64 year old taking up painting I love this work. I am attempting to follow your work. Can I ask you a question please. I struggle to get the initial part to make the shapes you need.Are you purposely making bird shapes as you create white space. When I do it I cannot help but try to make bird shapes and it looks forced and doesn’t flow like yours. Any help would be appreciated Stephen in Ireland

    • @skora-theoldguy
      @skora-theoldguy 7 дней назад

      Hello Thank you for your comment. I was originally inspired by the flock of birds you see in the video, and I then started with a background. The way I worked in this painting was very wet, and I could scrape the paint off and leave white marks. Yeah, I guess I went for the shape of the bird, but more as a secondary thought. The important thing was to create life on the canvas, I adjusted the bird's shape afterwards. That's the thing about the abstract expression: it doesn't have to look like anything, so don't be dismayed that your birds don't look like birds. Take what you like about your birds and use it, then paint over the rest. Hope you get on with the painting.

      Thank you for your nice comment. I was very inspired by Van Gogh and the Impressionists, but my painting slowly changed towards the abstract expression. 58 is no age and you are going to paint a lot of paintings. Each time you have painted one, your technique, your painting process, and your ability to evaluate what you have done (your eye) will improve a little. So keep going and best of luck!

    Regarding a child and their art. I recall a Family Circus Cartoon where a little one shows off their drawing art to the older brother and sister and they’re like “what’s that?” dismissively, The mom and dad not knowing what it was says; “oh ..hmm, that’s nice”. But then the little one shows it to grandma and she recognizes it immediately!! “Oh what a fine firetruck and doggy you’ve drawn.” And proceeds to stick it proudly on her fridge. 😊.

    The painting was lovely at 6 or 7 minutes what you called a "sketchy expression." You should have quit then! Then you worked it to death and made it look hard - like children's' block toys. instead of like nature .And put in blue! Ugh!. The blue ruined it. You use battleship gray blues, which are flat and depressing and in no way resemble sky, except perhaps during a winter storm over the North Sea. Try to get away from your dependence on drab blues. It corrupts so many of your paintings. Your videos are great and very helpful however. It would be helpful if you would discuss the various mediums one can use such as to slow drying time, add gloss and other techniques. Also varnishes. Thanks for these.

      @skora-theoldguy 9 дней назад

      Thank you for your comment. It's great that you provide such detailed and constructive criticism. I myself am quite happy with the slightly sketchy look the painting has in the middle of my process, and I have experimented without success to make it work for me in a final painting. As you may know, I continue to paint on the painting until I sell them. However, I myself am very satisfied with the painting as it looks right now. The blue color is in all my paintings. It is the color Indigo, which is my first choice. I'm sorry you find that it ruins the paintings. I painted the blue colors into the right side of the picture to create balance in the composition, and in my view I succeeded very well. I will continuously include how I use the different media in my upcoming videos, which I hope you will enjoy. Thanks for your suggestions.

    Oh Henrik! I do wish you get away from your dependence on dreary, depressing blue. Especially blue and yellow, an ugly color combination, as you yourself discovered when you decided to change out the background color of your painting of birds in flight. Why not pink? Or oranges, the complimentary color,? As of birds flying across a sunrise.? Blue is a depressing color. There's a reason why people say (in English) that they are "blue" when they are sad. It's drab, it's dreary and it's depressing. Branch out! You are so much better when you work in brighter colors.

    • @skora-theoldguy
      @skora-theoldguy 9 дней назад

      OK @veritas6335… I will reconsider my use of blue. I have to admit that I really love the color blue and don't find it depressing. If you look at the world of music, the blue feeling in blues music in my view is one of the most fascinating expressions of the last century. The fact that you are blue also means to me that you are in a state where you are also very thoughtful. In a way, I experience the blue as the colour of possibilities. However ... maybe you're right...we'll see what happens in my upcoming pictures...but blue lives in my heart.

    Great videos. Best ones out there. By the way, in English the word for a distinctive feature or dominant idea in an artistic composition is motif. Accent on the last syllable. Not motive, which is something else in English. It would be quite a stretch to use the word motive for motif. Good of you to use the beauty ratio. I believe it's technically 1.618.

    Picasso said, "I believe in inspiration, but it must find you working." Meaning of course, don't wait around for inspiration to strike to motivate you to begin work. It will never arrive. Just get to work. Inspiration will find YOU. It happens in the doing of it. If you keep that thought in mind, it will help you get off your backside and go to work.
